Collector Claims $385 Owed on Sears Account Paid Off in 2001

I paid my Sears account off in 2001. We turned the card back in. I started getting phone calls last month, October.

A Mrs. Payton from Portfolio claims we still owe $385 on the account. This is a lie. This account was definitely paid off.

She insisted that we only made a $30 payment in 2001. The $385 was a chainsaw that I bought and paid off nearly 6 years ago.

We returned her first call and left a message on her voice mail. She claims she didn't get it. She called again. We returned her call again.

The man answering the phone didn't even know her. Through some bantering she called us back again.

She claimed the same and we owe the money and did we have proof. That was nearly 6 years ago. My question to her was why didn't Sears call us and tell us we owed the money 6 years ago.

No one that I know of keeps record of this kind for 6 years. We will have to dig through records to prove we don't owe the money. This is really strange.
