Monthly $15 Service Charge Despite Direct Deposit Since 1995

I have had a checking account with direct deposit since 1995. Direct deposit accounts are supposedly service-charge free, yet for some time now I have been charged a $15.00 per month service charge.
Why should old customers bankroll new account benefits? I am changing to a bank where I hope to be treated fairly.
