Late fee and 26.49% rate after payment a few days late

I am in the same boat as many other honest credit card holders. I have had an account for many years, and have never been late. Have always paid in more than the required amount, and pay by bank transfer. By mistake, yes my mistake I hit the wrong button and my payment was a few days late. When I was reminded, I sent in more that was required and said I was sorry, since I have never in all the years been late. She said it's all right. My next statement included a fee for past due, and an increase in interest of 26.49 percent. That's more than gangsters charged on loans. When I called to complain I was told they can do what they want since I was late. It seems that they want the good accounts to make up for their write offs.
