Ripoff made settlement with son which was paid then ripped him off

My 20 year old got into some credit card debt which was over his head. Pentagroup contacted him on behalf of Chase Master Card to pay off a $6,000. Debt. They offered him a settlement of around $3,000. Which he paid off with weekly pre-dated checks he sent them. After paying it off he never received anything in the mail saying the debt was satisifed.

Then the phone calls started saying he still owed $6,000. He told the caller about his settlement and was told the person he was previously dealing with had left the company and took my sons' file with him, so they have no record of any payment. Needles to say being a kid he didn't keep all the letters from them. Now he's back to square one. He's trying to buy a house, but his credit is a mess. It's so frustrating, and they're still threatening him with jail, etc.
