Customers Held to Contract Terms They Never Signed or Saw

I have read several reviews since getting a "direct hit" from DirecTV, and it's not adding up. How is it possible to hold people accountable to a contract which they do not sign, or whose terms and conditions they have not seen up front? To my knowledge, when you are in a contract, your terms are listed in order to ensure both parties' rights.

DirecTV is hiding behind a cloak. They send you terms and agreements within your billing statement, after services have been installed, and it's too late to say I don't want it (you have basically sold your soul to the devil and not known it). The installers do not go over your terms at install, and you don't sign anything. Is this legal?
