I booked & paid for a return twin berth porthole cabin from Melbourne to Devonport. These are shown on www.spritoftasmania.com.Au. A twin berth porthole cabin is the best 2 people can book, unless they sleep in one bed. The site shows them, two side by side berths, a porthole between showing sea waves and sky. Beautiful.

What we got from Devonport was a 4 berth, double bunks, dripping bedding over the lower bunks, fittings for 4 all crammed into the the same size cabin. When I opened the curtains, I looked straight into the interested face of a man climbing stairs a couple of metres away, beyond him, lifeboats were stacked to the sky.

And over the porthole a streetlight equivalent glared straight down. All night. Thru the edges of the curtain which had to be kept closed. The people were there next morning too having a look at us.

I complained on board, and was told" its the LUCK of the Draw". And "we don't have enough twin berths". I complained by phone and got told by DES " well someone has to be near them" (ie the stairs, people looking in, and lifeboats). And sent me $18!!

I wrote to Josie McGuire, customer relations, and she wrote 'cabin allocation is an automated process by which a passenger chooses a cabin category and our reservation system allocates the next available cabin. Passengers who wish to choose a particular cabin or deck may request this." etc. OBVIOUSLY by booking and paying I had requested a twin berth porthole cabin.

EVERY twin berth porthole cabin looks out of the porthole onto the sea. ITS like booking Business class on Qantas and being given the back economy seat next to the toilets with people looking at you for the next 10 hours as they move back and forth.

'TT-Line would be delivering poor passenger service if we denied passengers a journey simply because we do not have twin cabins available..." We were not RIPPING OFF passengers but merely meeting passenger demand"... And so on. (LETTER AVAILABLE, interestingly personally unpleasant response from customer relations - just email)

"You booked a cabin with a porthole & we allocated a cabin with a porthole"". Well yes, like paying for Business Class and getting the window seat at the back near the toilets in economy.

Its comparable to buying & paying for 4 pieces of fillet steak and getting home and finding 2 and a couple of bits of SCRAG END. And having Spirit of tasmania saying" well its the luck of the draw""there was a high demand".

The staff were antagonistic and surprised by my complaint. I consider tt-lines and spiritoftasmania dishonest. They advertise and take bookings and payments for cabins and do not honour the contract. They do this systematically.

This trip seemed to have fewer passengers. There are 59 twin porthole cabins. 46 porthole 4 berth clearly looking out to sea, and 30 others with portholes which might be looking out on the deck.

I paid for the best, TT_Lines and
www.spiritoftasmania.com.Au put us in one of a pair of HELLHOLES. So we got the WORST CABINS POSSIBLE, after booking and paying for the best.
