Hung up on me when I asked them questions

Traveling & Tourism

Short version: don't call these people!

Long version: I got a postcard saying good news call (888) 279-9221. Knowing it was probably a mistake I called anyway. A man told me I won a $1,000 shopping spree if I ordered some magazines but I told him I didn't want any magazines. He asked me my age and pin number on the postcard and to spell my last name to confirm my identity. I told him all this.

He then said I didn't have to order any magazines, he just had to offer them to me. He then switched me to the "gift department". A woman who called herself "Miss Landers" and later "Emily Landers" was at first very nice and told me I would still receive a vacation, but not the $1,000. I told her my credit card's expiration date.

When she asked for a credit card number I balked and started asking a lot of questions. She told me a website address, a business license number and some other information I didn't ask for. When I said I would look into this and call back she said I couldn't call back.

I thought that very fishy and told her so. She then changed her tone and got snippy with me and asked me why I had changed my mind. I told her it was very fishy that I couldn't call back. She then retracted her statement and said I could call back but if I hung up without completing the transaction (paying for shipping and handling of the vacation brochure) that I wouldn't get the vacation. I felt bullied and asked why I couldn't call back. She said that each customer could only get one call and that my "registration" (even though I never registered for anything) would go to the cost center (or something like that) after our call.

I asked her what the registration was and what the cost center was, and what that had to do with anything. At this point she hung up on me. I was on a land line phone, so there is no chance it was just a dropped call.

I then did what I should have done in the first place; I consulted this site. And wrote up this report.

My opinion based on my experience with these people is that this is a ripoff.
