Days Inn
54th street, free with room - bugs, lizards trash & strip bar

Traveling & Tourism

$50 plus for one of the nastiest rooms I've ever been in.
I didn't actually stay. We were so offended by the condition of the rooms, the strip bar that is the front building of the motel and the apparent crime that we left after less than 30 minutes. Here's a brief walk through of our time there this December

The room keys were difficult to work. When we finally got in to our two rooms in the very back (174 & 175) the smell of dirt and mold was so bad that it hit you like a freight train.

Upon entering the room you immediately noticed that every corner was grimy. The bathroom had mold in the shower and I would never have set foot in the tub. Ugh! There were two large cockroaches in my bathroom. My wife's sister's room was equally dirty but I saw no bugs there.

It was just so nasty that we decided we couldn't stay. I had thrown my room key on the nightstand when we went in and as one final shock to the system, when I reached down to get it a lizard ran up the wall in front of me. I'm too old to have frights like that. Lizards aren't so bad really, but they wouldn't come in if there wasn't anything to eat (aka cockroaches, flies, etc) and you have to wonder what else can get in if the lizards can. Remember there are a lot of snakes in florida? (I read another review on the same motel from a woman who also saw lizards in her room).

As a curiosity we looked under the beds. Oh my god. There were old beer cans, used ladies menstrual products, what might have been a condom, old food, you name it. It looked like the maids used it to dump the trash in. I didn't turn down the bed clothes. I was afraid to touch them, but the coverlets looked ancient.

All the furniture was in disrepair and dirty. The carpet was damp (as was the whole room) and smelled. The air conditioner did not appear to work, but maybe it would have cooled down if I had stayed longer.

I do not know how the pool was or if the TV, which the buttons were missing from, even worked. The phone in the second room was missing buttons and looked dysfunctional.

The manager/desk clerk took it in stride and was pleasant when we checked out. He asked to see our credit card again and gave us a sheet saying no charge. As we started to drive out we realized that he had kept our credit card. When we went back to get it he wasn't there. We tracked him down walking through the motel lot on his way, as he says, to lunch. (It was at least 10PM) He had our credit card in his pocket and said he was going to reverse the charges in the morning? What? I wonder how he intended to return it to us. Yah, right!

Last, but not least. I heard a dozen sirens while we were there and there was a chopper with a search light combing whatever buildings were behind the back motel fence. He flew back and forth a dozen times while we were there. I discovered later that crime is much higher than average in that neighborhood of St. Petersburg Florida.

I do not recommend this motel to anyone who does not have a strong stomach and good ear plugs. I don't and I wouldn't have paid $20.00 a night for it. $59 was the ask price if I remember right and it was an outrage for the product offered.
