Gas turned off and have to pay full balance to get turned on

My gas was turned off in March of when first told that I needed to pay 375 to have services restored, called on Tuesday May 31, to ask the total amount I was then told that the bill was 417. How is that possible I asked could not get a straight answer just was told I needed to pay that to have my services restored, I live on the third floor, my air conditioner runs off of my gas furnace, we have a heat warning in the saint louis area, with no air conditioner is unbearable I asked if I could pay half now and half next week was told that was not possible.
