Walmart
Lack of Adequate Handicapped Access

Shops, Products, Services

This has happened to me at several area Walmart locations, but at the Acworth location, it happens with annoying regularity.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that retail establishments of a certain size have a certain number of designated handicapped parking spaces. This particular Walmart only has between 10 and 15 spaces, which are almost always taken (not just by those with state permits, either).

The only time I have been there and actually found a designated space available was at 3:00 am!

Apparently, Walmart does not in any way police these spaces, or otherwise make sure they are being parked in legally. City or county law enforcement will not issue citations on cars in the parking lot because it is private property.

I have been disabled for the past 5 years, and find Walmart's lack of access to handicapped individuals is egregious. If I need a cart/scooter, I'm out of luck most of the time, since the scooters are usually charging, have low batteries (stranding one in the back of the store), or are simply unavailable. They don't maintain the equipment, or clean it.

This particular location has recently remodeled their shelving displays, and now anything on the very upper and lower shelves is inaccessible to me unless I bring a family member with me to help. I have experienced this apathy at other businesses, but for the most part, businesses tend to be disabled-friendly and helpful. Not so at Walmart. I have asked an employee for help getting something off a shelf, and had him just keep walking like I didn't exist. If it weren't for fellow shoppers, I'd have been out of luck.
