Ripoff Dishonest company. Make sure you save your original contract, mine was altered after I signed it! Customer Service is bad

I signed up for a one year contract with Cingular over a year ago. When my contract expired, I eventually decided to cancel my service. I thought it would take a simple phone call to cancel the service, unfortunately I was wrong.

When I called customer service, I was told that I would not be able to cancel my service without being charged a $150 fee for breaking my contract. I told the customer service rep. That that was incorrect, because I was no longer under contract. The rep. Told me to hold on, and they kept me on hold for about 20 minutes.

When I was finaly taken off hold, I was told that it was a two year contract that I had signed; therefore I was still under contract. I told the rep. That there must be some mistake, because I had signed up for a one year contract, which had expired this past January. At this point the rep. Started to give me an attitude, and raise her voice. She wouldn't listen to anything I had to say, and when I asked her what I should do to resolve the issue, she just told me there was nothing she could do to help me.

Unfortunately I could not find a copy of the original contract, so I ended up having to get a copy from the store where I had purchased my phone. Since then, I have spoken with two other customer service reps from Cingular. I was told that in order to resolve the issue, I would have to fax over a copy of the contract to them. The first fax number I was given, was bogus. After another 30 minutes of phone calls I was finally give a correct fax number, not that it did any good, because I still haven't heard from them, and I suspect that I never will. I'm worried that I'm never going to be able to get rid of this service. Does anyone know if it's actually possible to terminate service with this company, without having to ruin your credit?
