Charged a fee for not telling them service was cancelled

Did not renew service for XM Radio. Now they say there is a fee for not telling them to turn service off. Thought that was clear when I didn't send money in to keep going. They say there was a verbal agreement u had to call to cancel, sounds like a scam to me.
