Are charging me for a new subscription, when the 1st one is paid in full

Shops, Products, Services

I regretfully agreed to a subscription with FRC by phone 2 years ago, and when I tried to cancel after receiving their mail, they claimed it was too late.

Now after two years, the subscription being supposedly paid in full, I should continue to receive my 5 magazines free of further charge.

However, they repeatedly called me at my house, and even my work, to offer me to reduce my payments to $29.95 (from $49.95) monthly. Of course, they finally got me at work, at rush time. When I asked the person on the phone how many payments of $49.95 I had left, not realizing at the time that it had been two years already, she said she did not have the information. She then hooked me up with an automated machine, but she was still on the line, giving me instructions, ("just say yes, say yes"). At no point, it is mentioned that this is a "renewal" of the subscription. However, it does mention at one point that this is a totally "different" subscription.
Asking for clarification, I was told that I no longer will be charged $49.95, but the new price of $29.95 for 30 months!

Back home, when I checked my account on 8/5/09, I saw that not only did they charge me right away $29.95 on 7/31/09, but they also charged me $49.95 on 8/1/09. Calling them back, I asked them what was my current subscription, and they said it was paid in full, and that there was no mention of another subscription.
Trying to have them cancel that new $29.95, Carla, some Customer Service Representative at ext. 222, told me thye could not do anything since itis not in their system, and to call back next week. She sounded very "expeditive" on the phone too.

I am not versed in the legal system here (I am from France), but I wish to know what can be done against such deceiving practices.
