Charged me after cancelling account sent bill to collectons

I was trying to get vonage for my parents, vonage did not offer Internet service so I then canceled, while doing so they sent me a modem in the mail, when I contacted customer service they just said to sent the package back as soon as I received it, I complied. Thinking I would never hear from vonage again and thinking that my account was canceled, I later received a letter from collections stating I owed vonage $137.29, when calling them trying to figure out why I owed them any money they then stated that I never verbally canceled my account and they continued to charge me monthly rates. When I tried to get the fees dropped, because like i said i never actually had the service they stated that i couldn't do that because they already cancelled the account (makes no sense) I asked why they never contacting me and letting me know this instead of sending it to collections, they then said they tried contacting me a few times by phone leaving me a voice mail message (not true).
