Scams People Who Report Downed Power Lines! Don't report a downed power line, or you could get ripped off for thousands of dollars. Richmond

Shops, Products, Services

About a month ago, I called VA Power regarding a downed power line. It wasn't completely down, just sagging after the last hurricane, and power was still on.

They eventually sent someone out who said that there are two options, I could bury the line or add a pole to the top of my house to raise the line. Each option cost at least $600, just with VA Power, not including a private electrician who would have to perform the work.

Each time I or my landlord spoke with someone at VA Power, the price kept going up. They have gone so far now as to say that the entire house now needs rewiring, the outside needs rewiring, a new meter box needs to be put on, etc. They have not been inside by the way. We were told that if we didn't comply, my electricity would be turned off because of an "unsafe situation".

Seems to me that the power company is responsible for downed lines after a storm? I don't know where the rest of this is coming from, and now they will not speak with us or give us any information when we call.

I find it suspicious... They are a monopoly, and have decided that we need thousands of dollars of "repairs" or they will refuse to provide electrical service to a home that is in excellent repair with neighbors who are not having this problem?
