Taking Money from the unemployed with false employment offers

Advertised in the Sunday October 19 newspaper under CareerBuilders was an Administrative/Clerical job Hire several now! Ft/Pt/459-2420/VA Personnel/fee/hiring Hampton Roads area.

When I called the number in the paper they identified the business as VES. I inquired about the position was it filled I was told no, and that it was a fee paid agency and that I would need an appointment. My appointment was the next day at 12pm, I gave the Consultant Sharon (no last name given) my resume, inquired about the position, the pay, and asked how soon could I be placed in a job. She told me that they had many clerical jobs and the pay started at $14.00 per hr. If I signed the contract I could be working as soon as tomorrow (Wednesday, Oct 22). But I had to put down some money on the contract and the total cost would be $365.00. I told her I didn't have any money and my income cleared only $235 per week was coming in from my unemployment benefits. I asked if I could pay weekly once I was hired and she said only if I signed the contract and that she would take a charge card deposit. I charged $100 on my credit card. I asked for my job assignment and when would I start. Again she told me tomorrow, but she would not be giving me a job assignment that would be a Service Specialist and then gave me a small piece of paper and told me to call back at 3:15 pm and I would get my job assignment.

When I called back I was told to go to the Hampton City Human Resources and fill out an application there. I said excuse me, that's not a job assignment, and I already had an application there, she then gave told me to go to Newport News City Human Resources and fill out an application, I said I have an application there as well. I asked her why was I told that you would be placed in a job tomorrow. She told me "Oh no you misunderstood the Consultant we only refer you to the jobs, we do not place you in the positions that is up to you."

I told her that the Consultant lied to me, she then told me that was my word against hers and that I could not prove that and I was bind to the contract whether they provided the service or not and that I could not break the contract and hung up on me.

I called back the next morning and tried to talk to the manager, she would not speak to me, but another Service Specialist (Cindy) who was very nice then told me to just take the referrals and try to make the best out of it since I had to pay for the contract anyway, she did not know if I was lying or not and then gave me a job referral; I called only to find out that they were only hiring part-time evenings.

I called CareerBuilder.com this morning about the Job Scam to report it, spoke to Melissa she told me to report it to usacomplaints.com, she also checked to see if that company has been complained about before and they have. It is pretty awful that they can keep getting away with this kind of scam.

I was lied to, conned, and scammed out of money I didn't have. I don't understant how this company can rip off poor people who need jobs and are desperateto work. I only fear that it will get worse.

I've contacted the Federal Trade Commission and put in a complaint requesting that an investigation be set into motion as well as a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I plan on contacting a lawyer. Hopefully the media will read this and do an investigation. If anyone else have been mislead like myself please come forward and voice your complaint on this company.
