If you are looking for good, reliable customer service, DO NOT go with American Van Lines!

It all started with an estimate by a sales representative. He came to the house and noted all furniture to be moved. Additionally, he looked in the cupboards, closets, under beds, etc., in order to assess what needed to be boxed and how many boxes it would take.

An estimate of 7200 pounds was given with a price of about $3500. I priced out different companies and called him back... I was able to get the price down to $3100. A ten percent deposit needed to be made before the movers arrived on a Friday.

They started loading things in the van and tagging boxes/furniture in the house. At this point the mover pulled out a recision form and noted that we were over the estimate and would have to sign for a "worst case scenario" of 10,000 pounds at a price of $4200.

At this point I told them to stop and call the home office to clear up the matter. I had not added anything to what the original estimator had counted on and I was not willing to sign anything at this point. After 1 hour back and forth on the phone with the home office, I came to an agreement with them for $3700 binding, regardless of final weight.

Fast forward 3.5 weeks later when our stuff finally arrives at our new address. Countless attempts to speak with dispatch regarding the status of our move were pretty much unsuccessful. Each time I was dumped into voicemail and I never did receive a return phonecall. The rare instance in which I got to speak with someone, I was given the driver's cell phone and told to call him about the delivery date, as if dispatch didn't know what was going on.

Attempts to reach the driver were unsuccessful.

I got a phone call at 8:30 A.M. Monday morning saying that they were 45 minutes away! REALLY? Thanks for the advance warning so that I could warn my employer and colleagues.

The truck was unloaded and I had to ask the movers numerous times to reassemble numerous items of furniture, something that is part of the package.

Fortunately, only a couple of non-expensive items were broken. I was disappointed with this company and would NOT recommend contracting with them for your move.
