Phone scam on older people to gain access to checking account

My mother also recently started getting pressuring phone calls to reduce her monthly payment by $10 on the magazine contract she supposedly had entered into. She was contacted on 6/18/08

After receiving a second call today, 7/2/08, she told the caller she had to contact her daughter first. "Ben" said he would call back in an hour. She called me and I told to have him call me directly.

I was called about 3 hours later. The number came up on caller ID as Quebec 514-671-0355. I asked for his name. He said it was Ben, I asked for his last name, He said Procter. I asked for his phone # and he said he didn't give it out as he didn't take incoming calls but he could give me the Customer support # of 866-988-2582. I asked the name & headquarters of the entity. He said Family Reader Club located in Norfolk, New York. He was quite insistant that payments be resumed. He knew the name of the bank that my mother banks at. I asked him to send me all information on the contract my mother entered into. He said the contract was entered into over the phone. I asked for transcripts of the phone calls. He said he would send the information to me and that I will get it in a week or two. I told him they would in no case be allowed access to my mother's checking account. He argued that I couldn't stop them. He was quiet abrasive asking if I had power of attorney, etc. He couldn't give me the transaction history I was asking for as "that wasn't his department." I asked what department he was with he said promotions.

I told him to remove my mother's name from their list and not contact her anymore as she is not competent to make contacts by phone. He wanted to know why. He said if I could send proof from a Dr and proof she was on medication they might consider cancelling the contract.

I told him I was considering reporting them to the Better Business Bureau.

I did call the customer service # but did not receive an answer, just the opprotunity to leave a message.
