Read the small print in your security contract

Four years ago, I signed a security contract with Protect America. They deducted payments from my account every month. About 15 days before the contract was going to expire, I wrote them a letter to cancel the automatic deductions and requested that they cancel the security monitoring service.
This system is supported by a land line and a few months before, I had cancelled my home phone service. The system at that point was of no use to me but I continued with my payments until the contract expiration. They continued to deduct payments from my account because they claim that a letter must be received at least 60 days before the contract expiration date. The bank told me that there was nothing they could do. I would have to contact the person deducting from my account.
I called Protect America and they told me that the contract would expire a year later and that I had to make payments until then. I am stuck with a system that I can't use and have to make payments. When I stopped making payments, they quickly sent me to a collection agency. What a rip off!
