Bank Account Debited $457.66 After Cancelling Service in March

Imagine my surprise when I went to check my checking account and found 457.66 taken out of my account for Direct TV, unauthorized. I called my bank. They said they will reverse the pending charge, but if Direct TV produces a receipt with an authorization code, they by law have to give them the money, and then we (the bank) will dispute it. I have closed that card down and filed a police report upon instructions from my bank.

Now I get another bill from them saying I owe another 215.00. Yeah, they will get that, NOT. I have tried to no avail to talk to them. All they say is we had a contract. I asked them to provide it, and they tell me to go online and read it. The agreement they say we had was as of April 7th, 2007. I told them I cancelled in March because we were moving.

So we had no agreement. They were supposed to stop service on April 14 and didn't until May 17, which I didn't know because we moved. They are trying to bill us for that month too. I knew I owed them 96.04 and that was all. We had them for about 3-4 years, 2 years with a contract and after that no contract. They say that since we received a new DVR because ours was broken, we had a new contract. That is news to me, because no one ever told me that.

What I want to know is how can they get away with taking money right out of our accounts without our authorization. I thought only the IRS is allowed to do that, and they aren't the IRS. We are disputing everything with our bank. Can someone tell me, do you get the money back? It's funny: we received one letter from them and called them right away and told them we were disputing the bill, and a week later this came out without our knowledge.

My bank said they did this to an elderly lady the other day. My person at the bank said she used to work for them (Direct TV) and that they get into so much trouble because they don't have signed contracts. I have talked to our lawyer and we are going to sue them. I have also written to the media here, but I don't know if that will help. We can't let them keep getting away with this. Something has to be done. If anyone has any answer, please help. We all need it. Thanks.
