Manager denied time off to attend fiance's aunt's funeral

I was a manager at McDonalds until today I worked there for 6 years, my fiances aunt had passed away I went in for my shift and asked I could leave 2 hours early and I was told by my store manager that he was told by the store owner that they couldn't accommodate me for the funeral meaning I wasn't allowed to take off to attend the funeral because I wasn't married to my fiance and his aunt wasn't my immediate family so I asked I can not even take off for a friends funeral either and the store manager told me no I said well if I went anyway I would be suspended he said yes because I wouldn't be there to work my shift. What kind of employer could be that cruel? Can they really suspend me for not going to work and attending the funeral and how can they allow another manager to leave early to attend a friends funeral a couple months prior.
