Wouldn't give telephone # where they were calling from but wanted my credit/debit card #

Got a call from a male telemarketer stating I'd won $100 for using my Credit Card ending in XXXX. I told him "No thanks" and hung up. Same company called me again, and I told them to take my number off their list, and they starting calling and hanging up on me. Next day after 3 phone calls, I answered and listened to the Woman do her speel. I asked her name, company name and when I asked for the phone number she was calling from, she said "I'll let you talk to my supervisor", then I was hung up on again. I tried to call the number back, and it's disconnected. I called my home phone providor and they said to call the police after dialing *57 which traces the call, start a report, then call them back with the report number and police persons name. I called the police and they said there's nothing they can do about it. Although, I did start a trace, that line of business will get me no where. I looked up the name of the company online and found this "complaint" Web Site. Even when we are being harrassed by these companies, we have no one we can get help from, especially if they're out of the country.

I was lucky enough to not get ripped off, but wanted to share my experience in the hopes it will help others. I was told by the Police the best defense is if you don't recognize the phone number on your caller ID, do not answer the phone. With more and more of these companies being out of the country, even as close as Canada, we can't get help. I'll report this also to the Attorney Generals office, but from what I understand, they can only help with legitimate USA company's.
