I received a demand letter from LocalNet for payment for services. I never used them, never signed up, I did not even know what they provided until looking it up as I have not been in a household using ISP dial-up services for at least a decade. I contacted them to report the fraud, they had no evidence of my opening the service other than the fact that someone called and gave my name and phone number. Apparently a Discover card was given with a another person's name on it which was good enough for this shakedown outfit. The Accounts Receivable person told me that it was unlikely that someone would call up and give a false name and number and that I needed to prove it wasn't me? I asked her if she ever heard of fraud and she hung up. When I called back they said there was nothing they could do, there was no one else that I could talk to and that I was responsible for the bill. I have since filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, the Massachusetts Attorney General Office and the FTC. I will be contacting my local police department tomorrow. Avoid this outfit - they are dishonest and clearly squeezing all they can out of a soon to be obsolete service.
