What's the Point of a Coupon?

I received a mailing from BN which inlcuded several coupons, two of which were for 15% off ONE item. I own a Nook Color and I have been very pleased with my Nook since the purchase back in January the thought of having my library with me appeals to me. Being in IT/Telecom I thought it would be convenient to buy and keep some tech troubleshooting books on my Nook. These types of books are never cheap so saving whenever possible is great.

When I inquired as to why I was not given the opportunity to input my coupon code I was advised from BN customer service that the coupon excluded "digital content" which according to the customer service includes Nook ebooks. If you read the fine print on the back of the coupon, pretty much everything except physical books purchases are excluded. What's the point in sending out a coupon if you are not going to honor it except on physical books? BN needs to go back customer service 101.
