Roof Installed in 2007 Leaking, $86,000 Damage, Insurer Stalling

In 2007, Home Depot put a new roof on my house. A Home Depot salesperson showed me several packages, and I took the more expensive one since it included a "Lifetime Peace of Mind" guarantee. The rep also assured me that Home Depot carried full insurance and would be liable for any interior damage caused by leaks in their roof. In September the roof started leaking again, and they came to "fix" it. Then in April the leaks grew worse and did serious harm to my house. Home Depot's "field team" came out to investigate, and they discovered the roof had been installed incorrectly. The installers placed aluminum and copper around the skylights, producing a chemical reaction that ate away the skylight frames and led to $86,000 in damages.

I have spent three months dealing with Home Depot's insurance company, Sedgwick. Mr. Dwayne Smith there has avoided my calls and my attorney's calls. Once I reached him, he told me he had misplaced the estimates from a private adjuster and from my general contractor. Mr. Smith has meanwhile never shared an estimate from his adjuster. It is nothing but a runaround and stall tactic.

He now claims an investigation is under way. On November 18 I last heard from him. Four weeks later, no investigator has been in touch.

Home Depot owned up to the fact that its mistake produced the damage, yet its insurance company will not cooperate and plainly prolongs my claim, worsening a bad situation. The "Lifetime Peace of Mind" promise is a complete joke. Three years on, my phone calls are ignored. I am stuck with a roof that cost 27,000 and still leaks, and a house nobody can live in. This has been a nightmare for a homeowner.
