Fraudulent Solicitation to "Register" Corporation Appears to be Legitimate State Document Until You Read the Fine Print, Targets Companies in Colorado Springs and

Lots of businesses in Colorado opened their mail today to find what appeared to be a demand for a renewal of corporate name with the state. Beginning with an official-looking title, "Periodic Report, Directors / Shareholders, Colorado Corporate Control #19991077648, " the document cites what appears to be a statute saying documents are required to be filed with the Secretary of State. A Denver P.O. Box is given with instructions to make out a check for $225 to "Corporate Controllers Unit."
Remembering that I had updated my company name with the state for $15 in past years, I read through the fine print at the bottom. There, it makes it sound like the document is a solicitation to purchase a product or service, which of course it is not since nothing is offered in exchange for your $225.
All the Colorado Springs TV stations already have this story. I'm guessing there will be U.S. Marshals in plain clothes standing at this post office box the rest of this week, waiting for someone to try to pick up their mail.
