Got "free"sample, cancelled in 1 month which they said I didn't, responded to bills which they said I didn't, then put me on Bad Credit List for collection

I ordered the "free" sample paying shipping, cancelled in the month which they said I didn't, responded to their bills which they said I didn't so they put me on Bad Credit List for collection. Called them explaining I was on SS and retirement and was unaffordable—they don't care. Paid them off to save my credit and told them I would file a report as very unfair.
