I went to half a dozen big box stores with a digital photo of a mysterious valve in my mudroom. Before remodeling I wanted to make sure before I removed this valve and had never seen anything like it. Finally a salesman at Orchard Supply quickly identified it as a drain trap primer valve. I guess it's needed after all and a pretty important piece of plumbing. I remodeled around it and I can thank the salesman at Orchard Supply. Nice job!
