Wal Mart Empty Gift Certificate - gift card

I received a $50.00 gift certificate as a Christmas gift some time ago. I went to purchase my items with it and the cashier told me it was empty. I didn't demand to see the manager because I did not know for certain how gift cards worked exactly and for all I knew, the gift giver didn't get charged. I carefully inquired the gift giver about if she was charged for the gift card. She was definitely charged the the gift card and I didn't tell her about the problem because I knew she had thrown out the receipt from that shopping trip and I didn't want to upset her. I also felt too much time had elapsed to solve the issue. I have purchased my items at Target instead of Walmart for the past two years because of this issue. I know nothing can be done now but I feel better just airing my complaint.
