Saying we owe them money

I received a letter today, 5 Feb 09, from this company saying my wife owes them $289.99. The letter is dated 23 Jan 09. If she doesn't have it paid by 8 Feb 09 it will go to court and have a cost of $3,000. It is signed by an account manager Judy Nye. She wrote 2 phone numbers for me to call. 941-301-6862 or 941-301-6498.

I tried to call them but niether one of the numbers are working. I looked at their letter head and it had a different number, 704-464-6550. I called it. A womans voice came on an answering machine, not giving her name or the name of who she worked for. It just said leave your name and number and ended with saying accounting department. I called them twice and left messages but I have yet received a call back.

The letter was address to my wife with a correct street number and state but incorrect town. We never even lived in that town. We no longer live in that state.

We do not know who this company is and never heard of them. I think I'm lucky about that too from what I have read. They do not have any credit or debit card info from us to charge to. We use our cards for everything and have had the same accounts for years. If we would have had a contract with them they would have had our credit & debit card info to charge too.

Because they have yet to return my calls, lack of payment info, & incorrect address I feel they got my wifes name from something or someone and are trying to get money that we don't owe. I believe it is a scam but some how got some of my wifes info.
