Miscellaneous

Today I received a text message from shortcode number 48000, as listed on other reports here. The message thanked me for signing up, and gave me my password to log in to thumbplay.com. How nice of them! A convenient service, really.

One problem: never heard of 'em, never visited the site, never send a text message to anyone. Sorry, just not a phone-media, text messaging kinda guy.

Immediately I went to the site and clicked the 24/7 chat button, told the person the problem, and asked for the ip address, email address, or any information regarding the computer or person whom signed my phone number up. The operator would not oblige in any way, only saying that he/she would block my number from the service, and cancel membership. I politely let her know that refusing to cooperate would only assure me that it was the site itself spamming random numbers hoping to scam someone into replying, thereby signing up for service. Still refused. Next call was to my phone carrier, which politely checked for and removed charges, and blocked future signups from them in particular, along with any other short-code type program. Now that I'm here, next stop is to BBB and similar agencys. Nice try, thumbplayers. Yucky innuendo but fitting.
