Never-heard of cancelltion fee of $450 Palo Alto California

I have had ADT home security service for 3months now. I called in today to cancel the service because we are tearing down our house and building a new one. That's when I heard, for the first time, about the early termination penalty of $450. I ask the operator if they can suspend the service for about a year during the construction time and resume when the house is finished. However, she said they don't do supension so that I will have to pay the penalty. Are they telling me I have to be penalized because I decide to rebuild my house? If I don't cancel the service, where are they going to install the control box (or whatever)? Put it up on a tree?
