Unauthorized $873 Checkcard Withdrawal and Refund Never Filed

On 7/21/08 I went to do grocery shopping and my check card was declined due to Direct TV taking a withdrawal of $873.00 from my checking account. Of course I was livid.

I called Direct TV to see why they would do that without my authorization, especially since the account was not even in my name but my husband's. They claim that since I used my check card on that account, they have a legal right to use it to take out money since it was owed.

I was told that if I let them keep the charges owed for previous service, which was a total of $198.00, they would refund the amount of $675.00 back to my check card within 3-4 business days. 3-4 business days came and went.

I called again on 7/25/08 and was then told that the original claim for a refund was never filed and that I would have to wait another 7 days, though she would file it that day.

The next day, 7/26/08, I was again told by a different customer service agent that there was no claim for a refund made and that she would make the claim, but it would not be a guarantee that there would be any refund to my check card; I may just have to accept the refund of $675.00 in credit with Direct TV. I was also told not to call back for another 14 business days.

The explanation of the previous day did not sound right, so I called again on 7/27/08 and was told by a very rude customer service agent that I would have to wait at least 7 days from the date of 7/25/08. When I asked why such a long wait for the refund, since they can take my money so fast, the agent said it was because they have 17 million customers to worry about, not just me, and that when they get ready to give me a refund they will call me.

This company is completely out of line. They try to give people a hard time, thinking they will give up, but I am not going to. I have been in touch with the BBB and if that doesn't resolve this issue I will take it as far as it needs to go.
