Strange Recruiting Tactics, Unprofessional Interview Ethics

Miscellaneous

I was contacted two weeks ago by a Liberty Nation recruiting office saying that they had gotten my resume from monster.com (which must be true, since my resume is there) and that they wanted me to come in for an interview for a possible managerial position. The economy is in such a slump right now that I jumped on the opportunity. The only problem was that I live fourty minutes away from their office.

That following Tuesday, 17 June I arrived at the Hilton Garden Hotel in Daytona Beach. I thought it was a strange place for an interview, but I soon decided that they must be in the process of changing office locations. I went inside with another copy of my resume ready and professionally dressed in an Ann Taylor suit, only to find at least ten other people there all waiting on a one o'clock interview with Don Shears, the "Regional Vice President." Some were older, some were younger, and none, including the company's personnel, conducted themselves in a professional manner.

The interview consisted of an hour long lecture given by Mr. Shears describing income potential with the company, flexibility, and benefits. Then he answered my one question: why recruit people who have no experience in selling insurance? He claimed it was because he only wants fresh managers as compared to people who have worked in the business. He wanted to be able to mold the new managers. It all sounded too good to be true.

Then they called us one by one to the back of the conference room to submit our demographics and arrange for a second interview. My interview was arranged by a young man named Tyree to be at one o'clock on Friday, 20 June. He handed me a business card with the name Rhonda L. Plumb and the company's address scratched off on the front. On the back he had written:

Tyree Friday 1:00 pm
116 Center St
Daytona Beach
cell (305) 409-8807

This I found to be very unprofessional. He had not informed me of his last name, nor did he have a proper business card.

When I arrived on Friday, in yet another Ann Taylor suit, I found the "new" office to be in a very questionable part of Daytona Beach. There were no signs on the building. The gate to the rear parking lot had a sign that said "Beware of Dog." Thank goodness I had my grandmother drive me, or I would have been scared out of my wits and gone home.

At twenty 'till one, there were three cars in the front parking lot.By the time ten minutes had passed, my fellow interviewees had arrived, but the cars out front had departed. Some of us tried getting in touch with Tyree, yet he would not answer his phone. We waited outside of the lockewd building for another fifteen minutes before he showed up.

The story? There had been a problem with the building. He would not go in to detail. He then said that the lady with whom we were going to be meeting had some sort of family emergency. Finally he apologized for not answering anyone's calls and said that our interviews would be rescheduled for one o'clock on Monday, 23 June. This amazed me that there would be another group interview. He and the entire company had been conducting themselves in such and unprofessional manner that I was immediately turned off.

I told him that I had family in town so I would have to call and reschedule, which I didn't nor did I intend to do. He did not even make note that I told him that I'd need to reschedule. Oh, and to make matters worse, when I thanked him before I left, he didn't even shake my hand.
