Scam, books, magazines, well-mannered

A young man came to the door asking what I did for a living as he was looking for careers to inspire them. Once he had me talking, he starts going on about being part of a team who are competing to win a trip and they get bonus points if you fill out a comment card about their manners. So far they have not asked for any money. He shows you a tri-fold of magazines that you can subscribe to. Each of them gets them a certain amount of points.

I kept saying 'no' I wasn't interested but he was pretty pushy. He's very well-mannered and takes notice of things around your home. He noticed my fiance is military and started talking about when he was a marine. Finally after about the 10th time I said 'no' he let me know that if I wasn't interested, I could order a book and donate it to a school. When I finally decided to order a book and send it on to a school, he started filling out a receipt. He told me if I paid in cash he gets extra points. Of course, I told him I didn't have any cash. He continued by saying even a "bucket of change" would earn him points. I wrote out a check for $65 dollars. I fully intended to cancel the check after he left - there was no way I am paying $65!!

I was really suspicious when he left and so I took my receipt and looked up the company - it took me straight to THIS website letting me know that it was a scam. I immediately called my bank and stopped payment on my check. I called the company but of course, they can't cancel "orders" over the phone. Luckily they won't get the money since I cancelled the check. I called the Upland police to let them know this creep was scamming people in my complex.

DO NOT fall for it! Always close the door on pushy people! That's my new rule!
