Tried to return unused box spring

After purchasing a new house, my husband and I went to the brick to buy a king mattress and box spring. After getting our bed a week later, we realized that we did not need the box spring as it was built in. We were told when we purchased the mattress that if our bed did not allow for a box spring that we could return it. When I called the store to inquire about bringing it back the sales associate informed me that I could not bring it back because the plastic wrapping had been removed (keep in mind, all of the tags were still on it and it had never been used).
I tried calling The Brick customer service line to explain to them that we were just looking for a store credit as we still had several mattresses to buy as well as a new couch, TV stand and dining room set. The lady on the phone kept interrupting me, insisting that I had to contact the store that I bought it from, even though I explained to her that I already had, and didn't even seem to care that they were potentially missing out on at least $7000 of revenue because a piece of plastic was removed.
We will be selling the box spring on Kijiji and are taking our business elsewhere.
