I purchased a "brinkmann elite dual sear gas grill, model 810 3660 sg" from home depot and after about 8 to 10 uses it caught fire externally and melted the knobs, ruined the finish and made the electronic ignition unusable. I contacted home depot and was directed to the manufacturer, brinkmann.
I contacted brinkmann, sent them pictures and a copy of the receipt at their request, and explained the problem.
They said i would have to do an inspection of the unit and decide what had happened, not gone wrong, but what happened.
I am not after any monetary damages. I am concerned that rrinkmann did not seem concerned that it caught fire outside of the cooking compartment. It was a potentially dangerous situation.
The design allows grease to accumulate onto the wiring outside of the cooking compartment that can only be observed by opening the doors and putting your head inside looking up into a dark area. You can only tell by touching the wires which are up behind the control knobs. Something i found after the fact by accident.

There needs to be a redesign of the units and a recall of the ones in use. I returned the unit to home depot and purchased a different brand that does not have the same potential problem.

I was tempted to purchase the same brand and modify it so that it could not happen to me again. The grill was very good other than it turned out to be faulty.

When i returned it to home depot the person that assisted me said that he had heard of fires in these models before.

I only hope that the right people hear of this and take the necessary action to resolve it before there is a fatal accident.
