InfoTech
On-line troubleshooting creates more problems than they solve

Internet & Web

Beware of this company. It is a web-based repair and troubleshooting outfit that claims to be able to fix your computer problems remotely. You'll regret the day you let them try.

First, please let me qualify my self: I am now retired from 25 years as a computer consultant in the San Francisco Bay Area. I repaired, installed and instructed in virtually every aspect of personal computer matters, both hardware and software, and was the person that was called after many others had failed. So I think I have some credentials here.

My experience with InfoTech began when my HP Mini travel computer started acting up... It would not remember desktop settings. Not exactly a show-stopper, but a pain in the butt nonetheless. I decided to see if one of the on-line services could fix the problem rather than do it myself, basically out of pure laziness. A little on-line checking led me to InfoTech.

They installed a remote access program so they could get into my unit on-line. What they also installed without mentioning it was a raft of spyware, keystroke loggers and other crapware for lack of a more precise term. At least 4 programs that had nothing whatsoever to do with the initial issue.

Then a parade of technicians attempted to resolve the desktop problem, spent over 7 hours without any success, during which time I caught them poking around in several of my applications and email program. For this they wanted to charge me $169.99. After a series of very confrontational phone calls with one of their supervisors they reversed the charge, but only after I told them that if they did not do so I would just call the credit card company and reverse it myself. It boiled down to "we can do this the easy way or the hard way... Your choice" and they chose the easy way since I gave them no other option. Had I paid for this via some other method I think I'd still be battling it out with them.

I finally resolved my desktop issue by creating a new account and profile and that's all it took. None of their technicians thought to try that. They dug around in every corner of my computer, fiddled with the registry, told me to uninstall several programs that had never given me any problem and were in no way related to any desktop or graphics issues, and my overall assessment was they had no idea what they were doing. My advice to anyone who encounters InfoTech is stay as far away from them as you can.
