Worried about connection, no software nothing but problems

Alright. I just signed on with earthlink and while trying to find out about terminating my current msn subscription... I happened on this sight... And now i'm EXTREMELY worried that i'll get the same problems... All i want is faster net connection, not a bunch of problems.
I NEED to know what to do and fast. Though i do not have the software yet, (the're mailing it to me) will i get slapped with the fee if i cancel now?
