1&1 notifications, no refund, notified 2 days after billing date

So, basically I had a website about a year ago. I completely forgot about it, because of this thing called life. Well, on 6/5/10 I get an e-mail from the 1and1 billing team about a domain renewal that is dated 6/3/10. I immediately contact their support asking for a cancellation, and that they not bill me. I receive a response with a link to where I can cancel my service. Then, on 6/8/10, I get another notification stating that I had been billed for the service (this was from paypal, not from 1and1). I contact them again, asking for a refund. They inform me that it had already been billed and that no refund would be available because I canceled after my due date. I responded saying that the first notification I get is 2 days AFTER the bill is due. They inform me that they sent a notification FORTY days earlier. I check in my gmail, and sure enough there it is. Of course, 5 spam mails from them with advertisements about their company follows, so I sort of missed the notification.

The only notifications I received were from 40 days before, and then 2 days after. Does this timing make any sense? The only way it makes sense is if they are deliberately attempting to bill people, and not give them an opportunity to close the account. Even a notification a day, or even the day of would have made more sense then the way they do this. I am still attempting to get my money back by arguing this point. I mean, it was only $17, but still, it over drafted my bank account because I did not know it was coming out, which cost me an additional $32. I don't even want the over draft fee, I just want the 17$ back, since the service I had was canceled, and they did not give me any proper notification.
