Made unauthorized charges of $10/month to my credit card for 5 months before I noticed it

Internet & Web

Several months ago, my husband ordered a poster from allposters.com. It was our first time to purchase anything from that website. At the end of the checkout, there was a button advertising a discount or free shipping or something. It said nothing about enrolling in a monthly membership. I guess he clicked it, but he never authorized any charges to our credit card other than the purchase of the poster.

I recently noticed a $10 charge on our credit card statement from "SHOPPER DISCOUNTS". Since I didn't recognize it, I looked at previous statements and discovered it was a recurring charge for the last 5 months! I also noticed we had gotten a few emails from them about our "membership" benefits, which I hadn't noticed among all the other spam.

I googled the company's name and found 17 reports on Usa Consumer Complaints.com. That's when I realized how they had gotten our credit card info. Someone else's report said theirs was taken from allposters.com, and that was one of the few places where we had made an online purchase.

I called the number next to the transaction on our statement (800-889-8776) and got a recording saying it was after business hours. It had an option to cancel the "membership", so I did.

Two days later I called the number again during business hours. I spoke to a customer service representative, which was tricky because every time I pressed 2 for customer service, the recording repeated the previous prompt, so I was in an endless loop until I decided to try pressing zero instead of 2.

To my surprise, the customer service rep agreed to refund our $50 without any hassle. She said it will take 3 - 5 business days, so I'll be watching. I expected to have to ask for a supervisor - as other people reported having to do - or mention my plans to report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, but I didn't. I guess they are getting reported by more and more people, so maybe they are more cooperative now when asked for refunds.

We would never sign up for something that charges $10 per month just to get online shopping discounts. We don't even shop online very much. I'm just glad I noticed the charges when I did. I'll be watching our statements more closely from now on!
