PROMac Computers
Incompetent technician could have cost me several hundred stolen identity

Internet & Web

To make a very long story somewhat shorter, I took a Powerbook G4 that would not get past the gray screen on start-up into PROMac for repair. Their technician, Kern Jackson, determined that the hard drive was trash and the computer could not be repaired. He had the computer for five days and I talked to him daily. One of the things he told me that he tried was formatting the drive and re-installing the operating system. I became uneasy and suspicious when he could not answer even simple questions about the work being performed on the computer. Eventually, the computer was returned to me and I decided to dispose of it rather than replace the hard drive. I called Kern and he assured me that the drive was trash and no one would ever be able to recover any data off of it, thus it was safe to dispose of.

As a last ditch effort, and because I didn't entirely trust Kern due to his not being able to answer my questions, I booted the computer from a CD and was able to run a disk-check, which told me the drive was fine - and all of my data was still available - it had never been formatted as Kern had told me. Knowing that he had not done the work that I paid for, I tried re-installing the operating system and the computer is perfectly functional now.

After this fiasco I found PROMac's website and Kern's "credentials". The fact is, he had no business working on my computer or anyone else's. He is not an Apple Certified Technician and his passion is software development - not computer repair.

I paid PROMac $100 for their work on my computer - but they could have cost me several hundred more either in a replacement hard drive or stolen information. I wrote to the manager of the store, Bennie McElhaney, but did not receive a response. I want to warn anyone turning their computer over to PROMac that an inexperienced technician may be working on it and you may receive false and potentially harmful information.
