Staples - Where's My Data?

Less than a year ago the hard drive on my PC crashed. Took computer to Staples for a free tune up. Then paid to find out what was wrong. Once known, I wanted to purchase a new computer, but was talked into fixing my computer by the Staple's tech. He decided to leave the old hard drive in the computer. I have had nothing but trouble with my computer ever since. It was taken back several times. Two weeks ago the computer started acting strangely. I spent $70 to find out the hard drive had failed and I needed a new one. After a bit of arguing, Staples said they would swap the drive for free, but retrieving the data would cost $70 more. Since I have an on-line back-up service, I agreed to just swapping the drives. I picked up the fixed computer and was handed a hard drive. After completing the on-line data download, I realized not everything had been saved (that's another story). I decided to take my drive to a computer repair store who would retrieve my data for half the price as Staples. That's when I realized that the drive I was given was the original drive not the one Staples had replaced. Where is that one? The drive with all my data? Staples returned it - uncleaned - to the manufacturer as a defective drive. They never told me they were going to do that, nor did they ask me if they could send my data to a third party. Who knows what is happening with all of my personal data now. I got an apology from Staples, but that's not nearly enough!
