Internet access charges New York

I had signed-up for AT&T World net dial-up internet service for $14.95/month and was charged this amount for months. I was assuming this was the amount I was being charged every month and did not check my credit card on a monthly basis as I should have.

In April I noticed I was being charged various amounts from $26.55 to $45.25/month. This started in December. I'm being charged $14.95/month then out of the blue I start incurring. 10 per minute charges in December. I called to inquire about these charges and was told I was accessing internet service through an 800 number and the charge was. 10/minute. I explained the number shown on my connect box was a local number.
I have down loaded the phone book of local connection numbers through the AT&T site onto my computer. The number on the connection box is showing a local number is being dialed for my connection. Nowhere am I being shown that I'm connecting through any other number.

I requested a credit for any amount over $14.95 for the months in question and was told a credit could not be given because my statement showed I had incurred these charges. I requested a supervisor contact me and was told Iwould be contacted within 24 to 48 hours. I'll post the results.
