Promote free sample, only pay shipping, then over a year later get collections call for ridiculous amount and fees

I ordered this over the internet about a year ago and I cancelled it per the terms and conditions that as long as it was cancelled in the first month there would be no additional fee. Otherwise it was an auto-ship program.

Last week I got a letter from a collection agency stating that I owe them $176.05 due by October 31 or it will be reported on my credit report. I recieved a call the following day from them telling me I had to pay it and it was "only" $176. The person informed me that they had attempted to contact me once in the last six months via e-mail that I never recieved.

I wrote a letter disputing the charges, per the collection letter, that day and mailed it out. They called again yesterday and informed me that my letter would not be validated. I asked why it had taken so long to contact me and the person told me they are just a collection agency they don't have that information. I asked if there was a phone number I could contact the company and find out and was told no, there is not.

Looking at the other two reports on this company I find it interesting that the comany/collection agency is charging different amounts for the same product.
