Vista Ultimate Upgrade Rejected After Required Disk Format

I officially bought a Vista Ultimate Update to install on my laptop. During the update process I was informed by the software that my hard disk had some errors and needed to be formatted. After doing so I completed the update but upon registration I was informed that I had no update but a complete new install (while my disk had been formatted) The Microsoft helpdesk was not willing to help me so now I am stuck with a useless update that costed me $500.
