American Online AKA is a ripoff, they scammed me after offering 2 months free net service., Worldwide

Internet & Web

My mother wanted internet service on our home computer so I decided to pop the 45 day free trail CD in & give it a shot. Everything went ok. We signed up & went online. Used it a good bit for all of a week or two but the service was so slow (the pc was an older one) that we decided to cancel & I did call to cancel 1 or 2 days before the 45 day free trial was up. Lo & behold, I was offered 2 extra months of service FREE. Well, why not? I figured if it's free, then what the heck. So, I told him ok. I even made a point of asking him if he was SURE that I wouldn't be charged & he said NO.

Barely 2 weeks later AOL debited my checking account for $23.90. I couldn't figure out what had happened or why my checking account wasn't adding up right when I balanced my checkbook. I called the bank & after a lengthy conversation was informed that AOL had taken the money out on April 10. I called AOL & cancelled my service & asked for my money back after explaining what happened. They claimed the charges were not "showing up" on their system & asked me to fax them a copy of my bank statement showing these charges. I did this & never recieved the reimbursement promised.

I called them back a week ago & got the rudest customer service agent I've ever had the misfortune of speaking with. He informed me that I had cancelled AFTER the 45 day free trail was up & that I would not be getting my money back. I tried to explain that I had cancelled BEFORE the 45 day free trial was over with & was offered 2 extra free months to stay on & that after offering me this, my account was debited anyway. He said he would NOT argue with me over this, he had explained to me the way it was & that was that. He would transfer me to someone else who would tell me just what he had told me.

Responding to his rudeness I came a bit brisk myself & he informed me that I could call back myself that he wouldn't be transferring me. I am planning on going to my bank tomorrow morning to dispute the charges. That money is mine & I am on a fixed government income as I am disabled. They have no right to take my money this way & mislead me in such a way. They have lied & stolen from a disabled person & I have never been so insulted as I was by this agent.

I was told I would get my money back & I have been lied to. I will tell you this, DO NOT TRUST AOL! Anyone who does is a fool. They are liars & all they care about is the monthly service fee you provide them. The lady I spoke with at my bank said she has seen this happen time after time with AOL & warned me to keep a CLOSE eye on my account for the next few months as they MAY JUST STEAL MORE FROM ME. So, BEWARE OF AOL & THEIR THIEVING WAYS!
