Unauthorized, Undisclosed charging practices of $24.95

In November, I came across a website that claimed a $4.97 monthly charge for membership to attempt to find a specific person who was supposedly a member there, and whose phone numbers and contact information I had lost or had been changed.

I somehow, according to the customer service rep that I spoke with yesterday, "signed on for additional memberships" that resulted in 3 months of charges ($24.95 per month plus the $4.97 per month membership).

I am usually very careful NOT to inadnertently click on something that might cost me additional charges, however, as stated, the claim is that I did. They offered to "cancel the membership" and credit the month of March.

My response to that was, "How can I, and why should I, cancel something I did not sign up for, nor authorize or use?"

I've read their responses to others, and disagree VEHEMENTLY!

"All charges incurred by any viewer on our service are clearly and conspicuously disclosed in advance — including use of a prominent icon and multiple clickthroughs in any instance in which a customer will incur charges. No customer could possibly incur charges on our service without advance disclosure of such charges and numerous multiple click-throughs by the customer to indicate their affirmative consent (and acknowldgment of their consent) to such charges."

This is certainly NOT the case. It is NOT clearly marked. If it was, I would never had authorized it (and still believe firmly that I did not knowingly authorize it). The keyword, of course, is "knowingly"!
