Ripoff they have no record of my cancellation

I cancelled my service in July after only having it a month. I am having high cell phone bills so I thought maybe I would sign up again. I checked to see if I could log into my old account and when I did I found out THEY HAD NO CANCELLED MY ACCOUNT! And that I "owed" them over 150 dollars. I called customer service right away and told them that there was a mistake and that I had cancelled in July. They said since they had no record of my cancellation they could not help me! How can they do this? What a scam - I am not paying for service that I a) cancelled and b) did not use. Even the phone records supported me that I had no used the service since July but they will not budge. I have no clue what to do now: (Any suggestions?
