Complaint - Returns

I have never complained online before and rarely return anything I buy. One week ago my husband purchased a portable radio/cd player at target. Our plan was to use this to tune in a radio frequency at a drive in movie. The radio box was opened and batteries were installed but the radio would not fine tune precisely enough to get the 92.9 radio station for the movie. We removed the batteries and put the radio back in it's original packaging to return-it did not meet our needs. Yesterday we stopped at our local target to return it. We watched the service representative tell the lady in front of us she could not receive a refund because she took the sewing machine out of the box only an exact exchange. When we offered our return we were told that we opened the box and the radio had dirt on it so we would only be able to return it for another of these items that did not work to begin with. The reason for returning was we didn't like the product and I am not sure how I would know that without opening it. There was no use of the product and no dirt visible. The unpleasant encounter ended with the rep asking just exactly what I wanted her to do with this used product. I told her to throw it away because it was junk. I shop at target at least twice per week because of the quality of the products. I recommend target pharmacy to my patients because of their friendly service and easy dosing bottles. Now I don't know what to do obviously I can't feel good about their returns department.
